We created the platform for digitization of the cultural heritage of the project: "DIGITAL CULTURAL-HISTORICAL HERITAGE OF PLOVDIV MUNICIPALITY"
How useful is this platform for cultural institutions?
The platform is structured by two modules. One is internal to the internal goals of the cultural institutions themselves. It allows them to compile a digital catalog for each exhibit and add to each of them the accompanying information in electronic form, including a digital copy / image. This happens through high-end automated scanners that provide high-quality images even on very old and sensitive books and documents without damaging them in any way. The types of digital content that the platform supports is great - 2D images, audio and video files, 3D capture of objects, 3D virtual tours, etc. Having all their information in digital format, cultural institutions can easily manage the processes of supporting exhibits such as tracking where each exhibit of their collections, especially traveling, is, as well as easily adding information to the database for each of them.
What is the benefit to citizens?
The second module of our digitization platform is aimed precisely at public access to cultural heritage. We created a project portal where institutions have the opportunity to publish the digitized exhibits for which they have already cataloged in the internal module. In this way, digitization enables every person, from anywhere in the world, to examine the exhibits online, to get acquainted with information about them, history, etc. There is an opportunity to group exhibits by age, personality, event and other specific criteria that add value to the cultural product. The user can create his own calendar with interesting cultural events.
Does LIREX software work with data compatible with European platforms?
We have adapted our software to work with data compatible with the renowned European cultural platform - Europeana, where digital cultural content from almost all of Europe's most famous museums, galleries, libraries and more. This means practically that by entering it to look at the Louvre's exhibits, you can also make a virtual walk in the houses of Old Plovdiv with a few more clicks or read some of the most important historical documents of the Plovdiv National Library " Ivan Vazov ". This places the Bulgarian cultural heritage on the European map in a very categorical way and is a powerful tool for the promotion of our country, and in particular our cultural tourism, all over the world.
What are the opportunities for developing such a platform?
Our product is extremely flexible and offers many upgrades in the future. There is a possibility to integrate with a mobile application, to create tourist routes, to merge collections of different cultural institutions, thus creating a complete cultural and educational product. By using QR codes in the physical objects of cultural institutions, visitors can access additional information on the portal for each exhibit, including the addition of an audio guide.
What can be the advantages of libraries in particular?
You can create a virtual library on the spot by integrating with kiosks or other types of terminals from which people can load their readers and read the e-books they want. They can make an on-line check for the availability of paper editions of the e-books they liked, book and receive in-place copies in the library, and more. At the domestic level, the development of the platform can be in the direction of automated inventory of the exhibits of each of the collections, as well as the development of a centralized register of the cultural heritage of the country. It is good that there are many European and international programs, such as the Norwegian Financial Mechanism and the EEA Grants, which actively fund the digitization of cultural heritage and are accessible to all cultural organizations.
